The
American Association for the Advancement of Science established
the program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DSER)
in 1995 to facilitate communication between scientific and religious
communities. The program builds on AAAS's long-standing commitment
to relate scientific knowledge and technological development to
the purposes and concerns of society at large. The objectives of
the program are to contribute to scientific understanding in religious
communities, and to promote multidisciplinary education and scholarship
of the ethical and religious implications of advancements in science
and technology. Since the program's inception, DSER has engaged
in a variety of projects that address issues of bioethics, evolution,
human nature, bioresponsibility and cosmic exploration from a multidisciplinary
context.
With
support from the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation, AAAS is launching
a national dialogue on the scientific, ethical and religious aspects
of biodiversity loss. The AAAS Biodiversity Initiative will seek
to forge collaborative links between science educators and ethical
and religious community educators on the topic of biodiversity conservation.
