Founded
in 1935, The Wilderness Society is dedicated to protecting Americas
wild places for the benefit of future generations through public
education, scientific analysis and advocacy. The Wilderness Society
was instrumental in the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, which
sets the standards for the highest level of protection for public
lands. Drilling, mining, logging and use of motorized vehicles are
prohibited within wilderness-designated areas.
The
V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation awarded a grant to The Wilderness Society
for the Land Ethic Program, which focuses on transforming the conservation
debate by promoting and supporting ethical and sound stewardship
of the land. A major aspect of this grant will include the dissemination
of a Land Ethic Toolbox to conservation and grassroots groups to
provide them with alternative ways for making a compelling case
for protecting wild places.
In
addition, this grant will support the design of a website component
of the toolbox so that the tools and reference materials can be
accessed easily by conservation advocates across the country for
use in their wilderness campaigns and related activities.
