The
Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) uses its expertise
in public international law, institutions and processes to help
protect human health and the global environment. It is guided by
the goal of sustainable development, by an awareness of the interests
and views of developing countries, and by the conviction that transparency
and public participation by individuals and local communities in
decision-making are critically important.
Through
its Climate Change Program, supported by the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation,
CIEL strives to protect the earths climate system while promoting
other environmental and social concerns, such as forest conservation,
biodiversity protection, indigenous people and human rights. CIEL
has advised policy-makers on how to create a sustainable, enforceable
greenhouse gas emissions reduction framework. For more than 10 years,
CIEL has been a leader in promoting strong international climate
rules, including the Framework Convention on Climate Change and
the Kyoto Protocol.
CIELs
focus in 2002-2003 is to work to ensure that international climate
agreements meet environmental, social and sustainable-development
objectives and to promote responsible U.S. global warming policy.
