ACS is a collaborative of 16 independent liberal arts colleges throughout the southeastern states, from Virginia to Texas. They have a tradition of cooperating on various projects, and virtually all of them are involved in the effort to teach environmental citizenship to as many students as possible. The ACS's environmental impact can be seen in three areas: raising the environmental consciousness of all member campuses; forging a network of faculty, students and staff who are coordinating their efforts to advance sustainability on campus and in society; and initiating specific cooperative projects. The ACS has served as a catalyst for campus discussions, elevating environmental issues to a high level of importance on campus. With support from the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation, academic majors, minors and concentrations in environmental studies have been established, as have specific courses and modules. Joint research projects have emerged, as have new campus and community initiatives, including energy controls and extended recycling efforts. For more information visit: www.colleges.org/ |
