Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI) is dedicated to building local scientific capacity in the developing world to control and prevent priority infectious diseases. By building local health research capacity, SSI empowers researchers to solve infectious disease problems in their own communities. The SSI program has trained more than 1,000 scientists in for epidemiologic analysis and cost-effective diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, dengue, malaria, leishmaniasis, cholera, leptospirosis and Chagas disease. In addition to the individual scientists trained, SSI has strengthened entire institutions and research centers and has supported Centers of Excellence in Medellín, Colombia; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Managua, Nicaragua; Panama City, Panama; and Lima, Perú. In 2004, SSI became locally incorporated in Managua, Nicaragua to conduct the Pediatric Dengue Cohort Study (PDCS), which studies the transmission and clinical manifestations of dengue in children. In addition, SSI-Nicaragua is assisting the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health in setting up influenza virus testing as part of a prospective two-year study on the epidemiology of influenza in Nicaraguan children.
