The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at the University of Massachusetts Lowell develops, studies and promotes environmentally sound systems of production, healthy work environments and economically viable work organizations. It conducts many of its projects in collaborations with community and environmental health organizations, government agencies, businesses and trade unions. The Lowell Center has become a national leader in defining and implementing the precautionary principle in toxic-substances policy and has a chemicals policy initiative to support preventive, precautionary decisions in the face of great complexity and uncertainty. The Foundation provides funding for the Precautionary Principle Initiative, which is developing practical methods, policies and steps for implementing a vision of more precautionary science and policy as well as extending discussion and promotion of the framework to decision-makers, non-governmental organizations, academics and forward-looking businesses throughout the world.
