Center for International Environmental Law

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) uses its expertise in public international law, institutions and processes to help protect human health and the global environment. It is guided by the goal of sustainable development, by an awareness of the interests and views of developing countries, and by the conviction that transparency and public participation by individuals in decision-making are critically important.

Through its Climate Change Program, supported by the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation, CIEL strives to protect the earth’s climate system while promoting other environmental and social concerns, such as forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and human rights, especially those of indigenous peoples. CIEL has advised policy-makers on how to create a sustainable, enforceable greenhouse gas emissions reduction framework. For more than 10 years, CIEL has been a leader in promoting strong international climate rules, including the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.
